This summer a Fayette County elementary teacher will get to walk in Abraham Lincoln’s footsteps as she represents Georgia as the state’s 2012 Horace Mann-Abraham Lincoln Fellowship recipient.

Alyson Pitzer, a second grade teacher at North Fayette Elementary, is one of 50 fellowship recipients from across the country who will spend a week this summer touring historical sites in Illinois including the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, Lincoln’s New Salem Historic Site, Lincoln’s home, Lincoln’s tomb and the Old State Capitol State Historic Site. Fellows will also hear from experts on Lincoln’s life and the Civil War era.

Since 2006, Horace Mann and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum have teamed up to offer 50 teachers annually a fellowship to study the life and legacy of the 16th president. The fellowship is open to any full-time K-12 teacher of any discipline in the United States. The curriculum is geared toward teachers of students in grades 4-12. No special knowledge of history or Lincoln is required.

Horace Mann is the largest national multiline insurance company focusing on educator’s financial needs.
