There is a significant amount of economic activity going on in Coweta County. But even that activity has not been able to offer any improvement to the stagnating unemployment rate. That rate inched upward in August to 10.1 percent countywide and to 12.4 percent in Newnan.

Coweta County has a workforce of 60,195 but with a 10.1 percent unemployment rate that means that 6,065 people are without work. The jobless rate was 10 percent in July and 9.5 percent in August 2010, according to figures released by the Ga. Dept. of Labor.

The jobless picture in Newnan was anything but good in August when unemployment numbers shot up to 12.4 percent, increasing more than half a point from the 11.8 percent rate in July. It was just a year ago when Newnan’s unemployment rate was 10.8 percent.

The jobless rate for August in Newnan translates into 1,699 people out of work in a workforce of nearly 14,000.

The unemployment situation in the 10-county Three Rivers Commission area improved just a bit in August, though it is likely that few people would consider a rate dropping from 11.7 percent in July to 11.4 percent in August as much improvement.

The Three Rivers jobless rate in August 2010 was 11.1 percent.

Georgia’s unemployment rate held steady in August at 10.4 percent. That unfortunate number means that there are nearly half a million people out of work in a workforce totaling 4.7 million people.

Georgia’s unemployment rate in August 2010 was also 10.4 percent.

And across the United States, the jobless rate came in at 9.1 percent, representing a small decrease from the 9.3 percent rate in July. The August rate equates to 14 million people out of work.

On a larger scale are underemployment numbers not tracked by the state and federal government. Underemployment, a measure that combines the percentage of workers who are unemployed with the percentage working part-time but wanting full-time work, stood at 18.5 percent in mid-September, the same as the 18.5 percent rate seen at the end of August. The underemployment rate in mid-September 2010 was 18.6 percent, according to www.gallup.com.
