Fayetteville has earned a distinction awarded to few communities across America. The city has been named one of the Top 10 Suburbs for Retirement by Forbes.com
The website in its description of Fayetteville said, “Homes in this 15,000-person suburb 22 miles south of Atlanta average about $200,000, reflecting the lower-than-average cost of living. There’s a local hospital. Mass transit to Atlanta, however, is limited, although the Atlanta Airport is just 10 miles away.”
Fayetteville Mayor Ken Steele noted the city’s changing demographics that lends itself to an increasing senior population.
“I think it’s a reflection of what we have to offer the growing senior demographic in Fayetteville and Fayette County,” Steele said. “And I certainly think it’s a very nice recognition for our city.”
Fayette Main Street Director Brian Wismer in noting the city’s selection said it melded with statistical projections that have been generated some time now.
“It’s good to get that recognition,” Wismer said, adding that projections by the Atlanta Regional Commission continue to forecast a 450 percent increase in the aging population across Fayette County by 2040.
The Forbes website in its preview of the top retirement cities said some retirees who have spent decades living in suburbs choose to spend their retirement years in suburban locations in other parts of the country.
