Thirty-year-old Fayetteville resident Adrienne Reshay Bunkley was arrested July 19 on charges of cruelty to children after a neighbor found her 5-year-old daughter on the driveway of Bunkley’s Cornwallis Way residence. Bunkley was at work at the time.

Fayetteville Police spokesperson Steve Crawshaw said Bunkley was charged with second-degree cruelty to children.

A neighbor at approximately noon noticed the 5-year-old girl in the driveway of her home, Crawshaw said. The neighbor approached the child, asking where her mother or father might be, Crawshaw said, adding that the little girl responded that she did not know. The neighbor took the girl to the home but no one appeared to be inside, said Crawshaw.

Officers responded to the residence after the neighbor called 911. Crawshaw said the girl answered the door when officers knocked and subsequently told them that her mother was not at home. A search of the premises revealed that no one was in the house, Crawshaw said.

The little girl was in possession of a phone number though no phone could be found in the house, said Crawshaw.

Crawshaw said 911 dispatchers were eventually able to locate the mother and two relatives. The relatives both said it would take at least an hour for them to arrive at the Fayetteville residence. Meantime, the mother was located at her place of work in Covington, having reportedly left home at approximately 10 a.m.

State Dept. of Family and Childrens Services staff took custody of the child and Bunkley was arrested when she arrived at her home, said Crawshaw.
