Georgia’s premier master-planned city is welcoming the Georgia Chapter of the American Planning Association for their Spring 2011 Conference on May 12 and 13 at the Wyndham Hotel and Conference Center. City Council meets Thursday
The Mayor and Council will hold their regular meeting this Thursday, April 21, 7:00 p.m., at City Hall. The agenda includes a Police False Alarm Ordinance, changes to the contract with TruGreen. Peachtree City Street & Path Maps are Mobile!
In addition to the Peachtree City App (“Peachtree City Map” under the iTunes App Store), Google Maps now has our path system! We have checked it with an Android. Pull it up using “directions” and choose directions by bicycle or pedestrian. That will provide a dark green line that indicates the paths. While the system doesn’t have the path IDs, it’s a quick way for anyone with a mobile phone to get directions on the paths. NOTE: Some of the highway crossings shown are restricted to pedestrians and bicycles. Golf carts may only cross Highways 54 and 74 at tunnels or bridges.
Gang Awareness in Fayette County
Over the past few years, Fayette County has begun to see the infiltration of gang activity, and the PTC Police Department is asking for citizen assistance in combating this problem. The department has implemented several programs, including the Gang Resistance Education And Training (GREAT) Program at Booth Middle School, and the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) Program in our Elementary Schools. Because educated parents and an informed community are critical in combating gang problems, the law enforcement agencies in Fayette County have set up a web site, www.fayettegangs.org, to help educate about gang activity, ways to identify potential gang involvement, and how to report any problems quickly. The site includes a means to report suspected gang activity, including graffiti (respondents may remain anonymous).
American Flag Retirement
Will you be getting a new American Flag for Memorial Day or the 4th of July? Do you know how to properly dispose of a worn out American Flag? The Fayette County American Legion has placed a box at City Hall Plaza to accept old American Flags for proper, respectful disposal. The red, white, and blue box, which looks like a metal mail box, is located next to the VFW Memorial and Flag Poles in front of the Library.
Peachtree City Police Host Junior Police Academy
The PTC Police will host a Junior Police Academy the week of June 6 – 10, 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., for youth ages 12 – 17. The program provides basic information about the police profession with the goal of establishing positive communications and developing a partnership between local teens and the department. All participants will have the opportunity to conduct hands on training in many aspects of law enforcement, including a ride-along with an officer. Snacks will be provided, and students will be responsible for bringing their lunch. Applications are available at City Hall, the Police Department, Booth Middle School, and McIntosh High School. Online Auction of PTC Police Evidence & Property Begins April 19
The PTC Police have obtained a court order for the disposal of property, some of which will be sold to the public. Items will be available on govdeals.com beginning April 19, including bicycles, a scooter, X-Box, PS-2, Electric Fence Kit, leather jacket, shoes, sports equipment, cosmetic items, jewelry, and knives. WASA Equipment Sale
The Peachtree City Water and Sewer Authority will accept sealed bids for three pieces of surplus equipment on April 20, 2:00 p.m., at the Authority’s administration building (1127 Hwy 74 S.). The equipment includes a 1994 Blue Chevrolet Cheyenne 1500 V8 Automatic, a 1994 Brown Chevrolet Cheyenne 3500 V8 Manual, and a 1986 Massey Ferguson Deck Mower. The equipment will be available for inspection on April 14, 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. Payment (certified check) due by April 27.
Annual Stormwater Bills – Due Date Extended
Peachtree City’s annual residential Stormwater Utility bills have been mailed to all homeowners. Due to a problem with the City’s external billing company, the bills were mailed a week late. Although the bills will have a May 1, 2011, payment due date printed on them, the City of Peachtree City will accept payment without any late penalty through Monday, May 16. If you rent your home and received the bill, please forward it to the property owner. Residents may return payment by mail or drop them in the box outside the main entrance to City Hall. This error did not affect the monthly commercial stormwater billing.
Project Updates:
Traffic Alert – Path 1124 in front of City Hall – Public Works will begin reconstruction of Path 1124 in front of City Hall on Monday, April 18. Work will be limited to daytime hours, with the path passable in the early mornings (prior to the start of school), evenings, and weekends. The crew will phase the project to cause the least amount of disruption, but alternate routes will include the City Hall/Library parking lot, the paths that go around Lake Peachtree to the south, or the paths that go along Flat Creek Rd. to the north. This project should be completed by May 1, weather permitting.
Library Lower Level Entrance CLOSED for Repairs – the lower level entrance to the PTC Library remains closed due to cracks in the masonry. The area has been barricaded for safety reasons until repairs are completed. Please use the main entrance to the Library upstairs until further notice.
Peachtree Parkway North Repairs at The Peninsula – The majority of work appears to be completed. The Water Department usually lets the ground settle for two weeks before installing the concrete cover, after which Public Works can install the final asphalt coat.
Lake McIntosh Burning – Fayette County has advised that the contractor will begin burning this week through April 30, conditions permitting. Any remaining burning will resume October 1 when the state outdoor burning ban is lifted. Fayette County indicates the type of burning they are doing, which is on the Coweta County portion of the property, should not create problems with smoke. Residents who do have complaints about smoke should contact the Fayette County Water System at 770-461-1146 or water@fayettecountyga.gov .
Rite Aid /Whitlock Ellis Entrance From Peachtree Parkway will have intermittent CLOSURES during construction of the Walgreens at Highway 54 and Peachtree Parkway. Access from Highway 54 will remain open. Path access via the Walgreens site remains closed.

Annual Easter Egg Hunt – Saturday, April 23, at Shakerag Knoll on McIntosh Trail. Free event sponsored by the PTC Optimist Club and Fire Department. Children between the ages of one and 11 years and their parents are invited to participate in lots of fun and activities. Fire trucks on display at 9:00 a.m., registration begins at 9:30 a.m., with the egg hunt begins at 10:30 a.m. Face painting, a moonwalk, games, fire equipment, and the Easter Bunny will all be on hand. Starr’s Mill High School Band’s A Night of Starrs – Saturday, April 23, 7:00 p.m., at The Frederick Brown, Jr. Amphitheater. An evening under the stars showcasing the talents of the SMHS Music Department! Featuring the Big Band sounds of the SMHS “Swingin’ Starrs” Jazz Ensembles, along with the “Octave Above” Jazz Choir., and performances by other SMHS musical groups. Tickets: $10 each available from any SMHS Band Student and at the gate. Proceeds benefit the SMHS Band program.
