An Army sergeant from Fayetteville has won a quarter-million-dollar prize just days before his return to Afghanistan.

Master Sgt. Gregg Curry with the Third U.S. Army Forces Central Command played the Georgia Lottery instant game Cool Cash and won a $250,000 prize.

Following their morning workout, Curry and his wife, Mary, stopped for a bottle of water at Kwickie/Flash #0245, 973 Highway 54 in Fayetteville, where he purchased the lucky ticket.

“We’re excited. We’re happy,” said Curry, 47.

The father of three was scheduled to return to Afghanistan April 18 after two weeks of rest and recuperation.

He has spent the last seven months stationed at Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan and will serve an additional five months before his return home.

With his winnings, Curry anticipates paying bills and taking a vacation once his tour is over.
