The Georgia Department of Transportation is advising motorists of a traffic shift on Ga. Highway 74 south, scheduled for Wednesday, April 6. Traffic on SR 74 will be shifted to the newly constructed lanes, from Padgett Road to just south of the Flat Creek Bridge. This traffic shift is weather permitting and subject to change.

“We certainly hope that all motorists watch out for this traffic shift and are extra cautious, while approaching this work zone,” said David Millen, District Engineer. “This widening project may be causing the public some inconvenience, but upon completion, it will improve the flow of traffic on SR 74, make it safer and less congested; helping the public get where they need to go in Fayette County,” Millen explained.

This project is for widening and improvements along SR 74 in Fayette County, from SR 85 to Cooper Circle Road (approximately 1.85 miles south of Crosstown Drive) for a total length of 3.30 miles. This project includes widening the existing 2-lane roadway to a 4-lane roadway with a 24 foot raised median. This project is estimated to be completed by the end of the year.

Georgia DOT urges travelers to call 511 for updated information about this or any other construction project on interstates and state routes. Georgia 511 is a free phone service that provides real-time traffic and travel information statewide, such as traffic conditions, incidents, lane closures, and delays due to inclement weather. Callers also can transfer to operators to request assistance or report incidents 24 hours a day, seven days a week. More information is available at www.511ga.org.
