Planning Commission meets tonight
The Peachtree City Planning Commission meets tonight at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall. The agenda includes the revised conceptual site plan for Southside Church at Robinson Rd/Crosstown, the landscape plan for the Wildhawks Professional Building in Braelinn Office Park, and a workshop discussion of a proposed rezoning of the 3.09-acre Faiyaz tract on Hwy 74 N from OI Office Institutional to GC General Commercial for a proposed convenience store with gasoline sales and a freestanding retail building. The public is welcome.
Council meets Thursday
The Mayor and City Council will meet on Thursday, February 17, 7:00 p.m., at City Hall. The agenda includes several budget amendments, including additional funding for the Fire Department Specialty Dive Team, funding for the Economic Development Department, and funding designation for the Kedron Bubble acquisition process to begin. Council will also consider a change in the calculation method for commercial and residential building permits, the formation of a City Facilities Authority for more flexibility in financing future facility projects, and funding recommendations for the Peachtree Parkway/Crosstown Drive Intersection and the Hwy 54 W Multi-use Bridge & Gateway Feature. TRAFFIC ADVISORY – PATH CLOSURE at Ruby Tuesday / Walgreens
Due to the path connection at Peachtree Pkwy / Hwy 54 using the Ruby Tuesday parking lot, this path will be closed for five to six months during the Ruby Tuesday demolition and the Walgreens construction. Staff has placed a map for alternate routes around this area at www.peachtree-city.org/documents/City%20Hall/detour.PDF. Last week, a multi-vehicle accident with injuries blocked a portion of Hwy 74 North in Peachtree City, causing a detour of all southbound traffic for several hours. Due to the tragedy that occurred as a result of that accident and the amount of staffing needed at the scene, the City may not have communicated the traffic issues well as we would have liked. We apologize for that and are working to improve communications during these types of incidents. One avenue the Police Department has and will be making better use of is Nixle. Residents can sign up at www.nixle.com and receive law enforcement alerts from the geographic area. Select the local agencies you would like to hear from (including the Peachtree City Police and Fayette County Sheriff’s Office).
Library Poetry Contest
To celebrate National Poetry Month in April, the Friends of the PTC Library Association is sponsoring a poetry contest! The contest is open to both published and unpublished authors. Cash prizes (minimum $50) will be awarded in both student and adult categories. The entry fee of $10.00 covers up to three poems. Entry deadline is March 1. What’s living in your house?
One of Peachtree City’s best features is the preservation of our natural wooded greenbelts, which also provide shelter to lots of Georgia native wildlife. Wildlife in greenbelts and natural areas is great, but the Housing Code Department and Health Department have been getting many calls this winter about wildlife moving indoors, possibly due to the colder than normal temperatures. Help protect your home from a variety of critters, including squirrels, rats, mice, and raccoons, by following these tips:
Eliminate food sources – make sure seeds, pet food, garbage, and even open composting, in a sealed container. Feed pets at regular times instead of leaving food out for them to eat throughout the day (indoors or out).
Limit access to nesting sites – cover or seal openings around utility line, vents, chimneys, and crawl spaces.
Eliminate access to nesting material – get rid of cardboard, boxes, or bags filled with cloth or paper
Inspect your home – Do a routine examination of the exterior, attic, and crawl spaces of your home for signs of rodent activity (droppings, gnawing or chew marks, rub marks, trails, paths or tunnels around the structure).
If you find evidence of rodent activity, contact a Georgia licensed pest control company. These companies can work with the property owners to develop a multi level plan of action or correction. The plan will include identification of the rodent species, exclusion of possible points of entry, and eradication through proper means of baiting and trapping. Peachtree City’s Resident Survey – Only Two Weeks Left
Responses to Peachtree City’s 2011 Resident Survey will be accepted through February 28, and nearly 1,500 households have responded to date. Please make sure your family’s priorities and concerns are reflected in the survey results that will be presented at the City Council Retreat. Take the online survey by visiting www.peachtree-city.org and selecting the Annual Resident Survey option from the main page. For those unable to take the survey online, printed copies are available at City Hall, the Peachtree City Library, and The Gathering Place. Both versions provide space to comment on any additional issues that may be of concern.
Project Updates
Lake McIntosh – Fayette County continues with construction of Lake McIntosh. Construction is estimated to be completed by Spring 2012, after which the lake will begin filling based on weather conditions. Planterra Ridge residents abutting the lakeshore may notice staking of the County’s property. Please leave the property stakes in place as the construction work continues.
2011 Senior Homestead Exemption – register by March 1 at City Hall
Peachtree City is still accepting the annual applications for the Senior Homestead Exemption. Qualifying seniors (65 or older earning $30,000 or less in household income) must apply each year for the exemption. The registration card, available at City Hall, must be submitted by Tuesday, March 1. Seniors who have not completed their taxes by that date will have until Friday, April 22, to bring in proof of 2010 income for their card already on file by March 1. Safety Recall Alert – Air Compressors
The PTC Fire Department received an alert about a recall for air compressors by DeVilbiss Air Power Company of Jackson, Tenn. The air compressor motor can overheat, posing a fire hazard. Affected compressors were sold between September 2000 and December 2005 under the Craftsman, Delta Shopmaster, DeVilbiss, Husky, and Porter-Cable brand names. Universal Dance Assn. Georgia Dance Championship – Saturday, February 19, 9:30 a.m. The McIntosh High School Chiefettes Dance Team will once host the state championship event, which is expected to draw nearly 500 dancers from across Georgia. MHS and several other Fayette teams will also be competing. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children ages 5-12.
