Fayette County sheriff’s detectives are looking for a gunman whose shot grazed a convenience store clerk Monday afternoon at the BP/Amoco gas station at the intersection of Ga. highways 138 and 279 on the county’s northern border with Fulton and Clayton counties.

The gunman entered the store around 2:10 p.m. talking on a phone, and waited inside the store about 15 minutes before approaching the counter and displaying a handgun, sheriff’s detectives said.

The suspect demanded money and discharged the gun, with the bullet grazing the clerk’s leg, officials said. The clerk then placed an undisclosed amount of money in a bag and gave it to the suspect.

The clerk told deputies that the suspect took the money and ran east from the store on foot towards Clayton County.

A K-9 unit from the city of Fayetteville was able to follow the gunman’s tracks to a residential area on Highland Hills Road, leaving officers to conclude he left the area in an unknown automobile.

The clerk was not seriously injured and was treated by Fayette County paramedics at the scene.

Despite the inclement weather the first deputy was on the scene one minute after getting the call from 911, officials said.

The Clayton County Police Department also assisted in efforts to locate the gunman, officials said.
