Things are a little slow this week, but we’re gearing up for the new year – City Hall Closed on Friday, Christmas Tree Recycling is January 8, gas golf cart ban back on January 20 agenda, and status reports on the South 74 Baseball/Soccer Complex traffic signal efforts and the City Manager search.
City Facility New Year’s Holiday Hours
All City administrative offices, the PTC Library, The Gathering Place, and Kedron Fieldhouse and pools will be closed on Friday, December 31. The PTC Library, Kedron Fieldhouse and pools, and the Recycling Center will also be closed on Saturday, January 1.
New Year’s Reminder – Designate a Driver
Planning to ring in the New Year with some champagne this Friday? Don’t let 2011 start with a tragedy, for your family or anyone else’s. Please be sure to designate a driver prior to going out on New Year’s Eve. The City wishes everyone a safe and happy New Year.
Reminder to Local Businesses – City Hall Closed Friday, December 31
Local businesses renewing their 2011 Occupational Tax or Alcohol Licenses are reminded that City Hall will be closed on Friday, December 31. The office will be open from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. the remainder of the week. Businesses that do not renew their alcohol license will not be able to sell alcohol after midnight on Friday, December 31, until the license is renewed. Please remember to include the signed SAVE form with all renewal payments. The City has notaries available at City Hall to assist with completing the form.
Christmas Tree Recycling – Bring one for the Chipper on January 8
Recycle that Christmas tree into mulch on Saturday, January 8. Bring un-flocked trees, free of lights, tinsel, and ornaments, to the PTC Recycling Center (Rockaway Rd at Highway 74 South), the PTC Home Depot on Highway 54 West, or the Kedron Village Shopping Center (behind Blockbuster at the Kroger end) between 8:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. Keep Peachtree City Beautiful and a host of volunteers (including the PTC Kiwanis and Rotary Club) will be mulching the trees here in town.
Gas Golf Cart Ban Decision on January 20 Agenda
At their January 20 meeting, the Mayor and City Council will once again be considering a ban on the future registration of new gasoline powered golf carts. The discussions have revolved around grandfathering gas carts that are already registered for a period of 10 years.
Update – South 74 Baseball/Soccer Complex Traffic Signal
Last week, members of Council and City Staff met with representatives from the Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT) to request they reconsider their decision not to allow a traffic signal at the Baseball/Soccer Complex. The City has requested several traffic studies over the past few years, and users of the complex have been very concerned about access to the complex once the highway widening and new median limits access to one of the two entrances. At the meeting, the DOT Commissioner agreed to install a yellow flashing warning signal at the northern entrance to alert drivers, and to have another traffic study done once the highway widening is complete. Special thanks to the residents and sports associations that wrote letters of concern for the City to present to the DOT at this meeting.
City Manager Search Update
The City has received over 70 resumes from professionals across the nation interested in becoming the next City Manager for Peachtree City. Resumes are being reviewed internally for qualifications, after which a panel will conduct preliminary interviews in January. Each of the City Council Members and the Mayor will then meet with the top four finalists before going into Executive Session to rank the applicants. Per state law, the City must publish the names and resumes of the top three candidates prior to the appointment; however, the candidates may withdraw from consideration prior to having their information released. The goal is to have the top four applicants designated by January 21 and to have a new City Manager in place by the beginning of March. However, if the interviews reveal that none of the current applicants is a good fit for Peachtree City, staff will readvertise the position if necessary.
Kindle for Christmas?
The Peachtree City Library has been getting lots of calls from residents who received a Kindle, Nook, or other e-reader for the holidays. Unfortunately, at this time the PTC Library does not offer e-books. However, our library is a member of a consortium that will vote in the first quarter of 2011 on whether to add e-books to their services. If the consortium votes no, the PTC Library will continue to investigate options in the coming months and will advise patrons when more information becomes available.
Traffic Alerts – Path Closures
Path 1548 Remains Closed. This path connects from the path that extends from Aberdeen Shopping Center into Westpark to the businesses (Cheers Bottle Shop and the BP Station) on Highway 54 between Northlake Drive and Highway 74. It is closed until further notice due to a path/pipe failure, and a water flow study will be required. The path is not safe for pedestrians, cyclists, or golf carts. Public Works and the Stormwater Department will advise when the path has been reopened.

Dog Park Free Admission through January 1
The Peachtree City Dog Park Association is providing a special winter holiday open-gate period from through New Year’s Day to allow local families and visiting relatives and their dogs to enjoy Peachtree City’s most pet-friendly amenity free of charge. The park, located at 191 McIntosh Trail behind the BMX track, is open every day from dawn to dusk. The Peachtree City Dog Park Association is a non-profit corporation contracting with the city to operate and maintain the Dog Park. For more information, go to www.ptcdogpark.com .
