Mary Evelyn King, 8, of Fayetteville — Mary Evelyn was precious not only to her family and people who knew her, but also to the thousands of people she never met, whose lives she touched through sharing her story on our blog as she graciously lived a beautiful life by bringing joy to others while under the hardship of being a cancer patient. Her tender, sweet spirit loved other people in everything she did and she was patient, sweet and thoughtful of her family’s needs even in her final days. She faithfully prayed for other people and seemed as at home in her church as she did in her own house.

Mary Evelyn was diagnosed with neuroblastoma at the age of two and after intensive therapy at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta she achieved remission which lasted for four years. Sadly she relapsed with the same cancer and there was no known cure. Even after the relapse, she shared her story in public which inspired people to live their lives with gratitude and grace and also to donate to help cure children with cancer. Her school, Peeples Elementary, thought of her as a ray of sunshine and her kind spirit helped her classmates learn to empathize with people who have grave illnesses instead of being afraid of them. She loved to bring joy, even in the spunky way she dressed, and brightened everyone’s spirits everywhere she went.

Her loss grieves us for ourselves, but brings us comfort as we know her time of suffering has passed and she has gone from us in her innocent purity to be in heaven.

Survivors include her parents Mark & Edna King, brother, Thomas King, grandparents Rev. Ray and Evelyn King of Newnan, aunts and uncles, Ray and Janice King, Stephen and Pamela Pugh, Michael and Angela Hogg, Frank Delzell, and also other aunts & uncles.

A Celebration of Life will be held 11:00 AM, Monday, October 11, 2010 at St. Elias Orthodox Church with Father Michael Evans and Father Jacob Myers officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday, 4:00 – 6:00 PM at the funeral home. The family request donations be made to Cure Childhood Cancer.
