Path safety reminder, update on Hwy 74 widening & road closing, Patriot Day events, and lots to do this week!
TRAFFIC ADVISORY for Peachtree Parkway S / Waterwood Bend – Monday & Tuesday, August 30 & 31
The City contractor will be performing repairs on Waterwood Bend at the south intersection with Peachtree Parkway South (near J.C. Booth Middle School) to address some issues with settling that have developed. As a result, the southern entrance of Waterwood Bend will be closed following the start of school on Monday, August 30. The goal is to have the entrance reopened by the time school dismisses on Tuesday afternoon, August 31. Drivers and area residents should use the north entrance to Waterwood Bend during the closure.
TRAFFIC ADVISORY for HWY 74 South (POSTPONED)
The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) will have to close Highway 74 South completely between Rockaway Rd and Redwine Rd for drainage work, and are planning to close on a Friday evening and reopen very early the following Monday morning. The original date was August 27 – 30, but this has been POSTPONED until a later weekend (not the weekend of the Great Georgia Air Show). Path Safety Advisory – Avoid Closed Paths
With the random storms over the past few weeks, the City’s tree removal contractor has been working to address damaged and dangerous trees throughout Peachtree City’s greenbelts and along the paths. In some cases, paths must be closed due to the danger from a damaged tree or the work being performed. If a path is barricaded or blocked with caution tape, PLEASE USE ANOTHER ROUTE. This is for the safety of all path users, and applies to pedestrians, cyclists, and golf cart drivers.
Patriot Day / Freedom Walk – Saturday, September 11
Peachtree City will remember the lives of nearly 3,000 people killed on September 11, 2001, on Saturday, September 11, 2010. The event will be held at Atlanta Regional Airport – Falcon Field at 9:30 a.m. with the “America Supports You Freedom Walk,” followed at 10 a.m. with a formal program. The public is invited to participate in the walk, which is less than one mile and all on airport grounds. The formal program will be held at the Veterans Memorial at Falcon Field (Rain Location – Commemorative Air Force hangar on Echo Court).
Honor Flight – Red, White & Blue Challenge – September 15
Honor Flight Fayette, the non-profit organization created to recognize local World War II Veterans, will host its seventh and final flight to Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, September 15, 2010. The flight will provide another 70 WWII veterans an opportunity to visit their National World War II Memorial. The group will meet at 6:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Fayetteville to depart for the airport. The Challenge: Help show our veterans how much their contribution is appreciated by lining the streets of Fayetteville to see them off. Well-wishers are encouraged to wear red, white, and blue, and wave American Flags along the route (from the church on Hwy 54 to GA 85 north to GA 314 in Fayetteville) for the motorcade, which departs for the airport at 6:30 a.m.
Project UPDATES
• Rockaway Road Realignment – The GDOT began paving this week, with an expected opening of the new road on Friday, August 27.
• Paschall / Willow / Hwy 74 Tunnel & Path Connections – The City’s contractor is making good progress: the paths are paved, the retaining walls are nearly complete, and only final grading and grassing remain. This projected should be completed by the August 31 deadline.
• MacDuff Parkway Tunnel Connection – Staff continues to work to obtain the necessary easements for this project.
