Richard Lee (Dick) Matthews, age 86, of Morrow and Peachtree City Georgia died Saturday, May 29, 2010. Son of James E. Matthews, Sr. and Caroline Elizabeth Jones Matthews, Dick was born January 10, 1924 in Lee County, GA, and grew up in Leesburg and Jonesboro, GA. He was predeceased by his wife, Carolyn L. Matthews, and brothers, William M. and James E. Matthews, Jr.
Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Roy Dean and Susan M. Wilson of Peachtree City, grandson Alexander (Alex) James Wilson and granddaughter Alison Taylor Wilson; sister in law Audrey Long Matthews; special nephew, James (Jim) E. Matthews III and Caroline and their children Christopher, Susannah and Katherine Matthews; and many other nieces, nephews and friends. Dick was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in France and Germany in 1943-45. He married Carolyn Long in 1951. He was a founding member of the Morrow Volunteer Fire department. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Morrow. He was an aircraft mechanic for over 30 years and retired from Southern Airways (which became Republic and Northwest, now Delta Airlines). For many years Dick and his family spent their free time in Florida’s panhandle, fishing in St. Marks Bay with his brother, Ed, and sister in law Audrey, and enjoying cottages that he and Ed built. He enjoyed gardening, building things and cooking.
The funeral service will be 11:00 AM, Thursday, June 3, 2010in the Morrow Chapel of Pope Dickson & Son Funeral Home with Dr. Thomas Quisenberry officiating. Interment with Military Honors will follow in Westview Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM, Wednesday, June 2, 2010.
