The Peachtree City Council is expected to vote tonight on a resolution to support putting a new 1 percent sales tax on the November ballot for voters' consideration.
The item was added to council's agenda Tuesday afternoon after the initial agenda was released Friday afternoon. Council will discuss the matter at its meeting tonight at 7 p.m. at City Hall, though the resolution is near the end of a very lengthy agenda.
Monday evening, officials from Peachtree City and Fayette's other municipalities met with county leaders to discuss potential projects for a new special purpose local option sales tax (SPLOST) that would collect funds over six years instead of the traditional five-year term. The current countywide SPLOST for transportation projects expires in April.
The decision to put another SPLOST on the ballot rests solely with the Fayette County Commission, which has proposed doubling the local homestead property tax exemption if the SPLOST is passed.
The county's potential SPLOST projects include:
• $50 million to pay off the county’s Justice Center;
• $2 million for an emergency operations center;
• $5 million to establish a university campus; and
• $15 million for transportation projects.
At Monday's meeting, Peachtree City Mayor Harold Logsdon identified potential SPLOST projects for the city as follows:
• $5.4 million for debt retirement;
• $6 million for street resurfacing;
• $2.4 million for multi-use path resurfacing; and
• The remaining balance going for multiple smaller projects related to the extension and upgrading of multi-use paths, tunnel work and erosion control.
