A 10-year-old Fayette County boy died early Sunday morning after he was shot in the head the day before by his 12-year-old brother, sheriff’s deputies said.

Prior to the shooting, the older child had picked the weapon up from a table where their father had left it, deputies said.

Officials said the shooting occurred Saturday afternoon at the family’s home on Edmondson Way, which is just north of Fayetteville a short distance from New Hope Road.

The case is being investigated by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department.
