The second wave of World War II veterans from Fayette and surrounding counties are on their way to Washington, D.C. this morning for their day-long trip to visit the WWII Memorial.

The veterans and their guardians - who will assist them during the trip - departed after a spirited breakfast at Fayetteville First United Methodist Church that featured music from Peachtree Jazz Edition.

As they boarded the buses, a small crowd that braved the rain cheered the veterans and wished them well on their trip, waving flags and goodbye as they depart on their trip, which is completely free of charge to veterans thanks to donors to Honor Flight Fayette.

The group took off in buses escorted by an escort led by two patriotic motorcycles flying the colors and a host of deputies from the Fayette County Sheriff's Office.

Citizen staff writer and Fayette County Historian Carolyn Cary attended the maiden voyage of Honor Flight Fayette in May. Click HERE to view her article about the experience.
