The summer break did not last too long for many of Coweta County’s students.

School spokesperson Dean Jackson confirmed this week that 1,200 students will be headed to class starting June 2 for CRCT remediation classes.

“We’ll have the classes set up at six elementary schools and two middle schools,” Jackson said.

School systems and the state Department of Education have come under fire after the recent test scores were released. Failure rates rose dramatically at systems around the state, and Jackson said Coweta was no exception.

“In 2007, 81 percent of the students passed the eighth grade math test, while 86 percent of Coweta students passed. This year, 62 percent of the state students passed, while 67 percent of Coweta’s students passed,” he said.

This year’s tests incorporate the new Georgia Performance Standards, and Jackson said there is always a slight downturn when new standards are added in the the test.

“We had a similar result with science scores last year, but it eventually evens out,” he added.

The retests for the CRCT are set for June 19 and 20.
