The Peachtree City Council is urging state officials to take a more active role in preventing Clayton County’s school system from losing its accreditation.

The Council adopted a resolution Wednesday night at a special called meeting officially opposing the concept of allowing Clayton students to attend other schools, including Fayette.

A bill in the legislature that would have allowed Clayton students to transfer to Fayette schools has been amended to make the transfer option and not a requirement on behalf of accepting school districts. Earlier this week it was sent back to the House Rules committee, and it wasn’t clear if SB 458 was even going to come up for a vote tomorrow, the last day of the legislative session.

SB 458 didn’t address the funding shortfall that would come with each new student enrolling from Clayton County in Fayette schools, as the school board pays an additional $4,000 each year above state and federal payments to educate each student.

Peachtree City’s resolution asked that if students from de-accredited schools be allowed to enroll in Fayette, that the de-accredited school system be required to reimburse Fayette for the additional costs of educating their students.
