Developer suggested buying part of nature area

Despite a recent media report to the contrary, it seems Costco isn’t close to coming to Peachtree City after all.

The company expressed interest several months ago in locating to a shopping center that will be built on the south side of Ga. Highway 54 next to Planterra Way, said City Planner David Rast.

But those plans went nowhere as developer Doug McMurrain of Capital City Development pitched the idea of buying a portion of the city’s Line Creek Nature Area from the city, Rast said. The nature area is adjacent to McMurrain’s property.

Last week the Newnan Times Herald quoted commercial shopping center developer Stan Thomas saying that Costco was showing more interest in Peachtree City than in Newnan.

According to the Costco website, the company’s warehouses vary in size from 70,000 to 205,000 square feet, with an average size of 141,000 square feet.

Because of the city’s “big box” size limitations, the company would need a special use permit from the City Council unless it were to locate in an existing store.
