Mr. and Mrs. Richard Schaefer of Greer, S.C., announce the engagement of their daughter, Nicole Lynette, to Andrew Clifton Balchin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Balchin of Fayetteville.

The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Mrs. Helen Slade and the late Stanley James Slade of Cleveland, Ohio, and the late Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Schaefer, also of Cleveland. She earned a B.S. in animal science and a doctor of pharmacy degree from the University of Georgia. She completed a pharmacy practice residency at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, S.C., where she is now employed as a clinical pharmacist.

The groom-elect is the grandson of Mrs. Alma Smith and the late Henry A. Smith of Sparta, and the late Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Balchin Sr. of Elberton. He earned a B.S. in biology from the University of Georgia and served four years in the United States Army as a commissioned officer. He currently is pursuing a B.S. in civil engineering at The Citadel in Charleston.

The wedding is planned for Oct. 13, 2007, in Charleston.
