Sandy Creek High School’s volleyball parents are hotter than the un-air-conditioned gymnasium and blasted the school system Monday night for a lack of coolness.

“We were not a priority,” said volleyball parent Judy Belyeu.

Belyeu said the volleyball team had been told in 2005 that air conditioning would be installed in the gymnasium in 2006. But bleachers were installed, and the air-conditioning issue kept getting hotter.

“How can incompetence be allowed to continue?” said Belyeu.

She said system officials told her the air conditioning would be installed by the time school started, but the volleyball team is still continuing to swelter.

Another volleyball parent, Carol Gillespie, said she was looking for a commitment from the facilities department on when the work at the gym would be completed.

In a letter to parents dated earlier this month, Principal Roy Rabold said he expects the gym to be completed by Oct. 19.

“This plan will allow access to the gym for volleyball practice and home matches and enable some one-on-one practice time for our basketball teams,” he said.

Superintendent John DeCotis pledged to inform the school board and the parents if there was any deviation from the schedule.
