Victims of family violence in Georgia may be eligible for free legal advice on temporary protective orders, child custody, public benefits or other related matters from the Georgia Legal Services Program.

GLSP attorneys and volunteers can help sort out legal problems that victims may have as a result of the violence, the agency said.

Family violence is the leading cause of injury for women in Georgia between 15 and 44 years old, according to the violence prevention project of the Georgia Department of Public Health.

GLSP may be contacted at 404-894-7707 or 1-800-822-5391 for more information. Other helpful websites on the issue include: LegalAid-GA.org, Tapestri.org, GCADV.org, EndAbuse.org and GNESA.org. Georgia also has a 24-hour domestic violence hotline to help victims locate an emergency shelter: 1-800-33-HAVEN.

GLSP is the largest legal aid organization in the state providing legal services in civil matters to low-income Georgians. The agency’s mission is to provide access to justice and opportunities out of poverty for its clients.
