Police say speed may have played a role in a Friday afternoon wreck on Peachtree Parkway that seriously injured a Sharpsburg woman.

A witness told police that he saw the 2001 Toyota Corolla going “extremely fast” moments before the car crashed into a patch of trees in the median just south of Windgate Road, said Police Chief James Murray.

The driver of the car, Meghan Sanchez, 22, of Hillsborough Court, was ejected through the rear windshield, police said. According to witness statements and a physical examination of the scene, the car was in the left hand lane going north on the parkway when the left wheels crossed the yellow line and left the road, police said.

Sanchez then tried to get back on the road but over-corrected, sending the car spinning sideways before it struck several trees, police said.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing, Murray said.
