Smoke came from ventilation system

Starr's Mill High School was evacuated briefly this afternoon when smoke was noticed in a classroom area, officials said.

The smoke actually came from a motor in the school's ventilation system, and once the problem was detected students were allowed back into the school, said Capt. Pete Nelms of the Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services.

The incident was reported about 1:30 p.m. and the school resource officer "made the right decision" to pull the fire alarm and evacuate the school, Nelms said.

The smoke entered the classroom from an outside area, Nelms explained. No injuries were reported.
