Four teenagers were arrested early Tuesday morning after a sheriff’s deputy spotted them trying to set off an explosion at the old Kiwanis Fairgrounds, police said.

The deputy pulled into the fairgrounds around 4 a.m. after noticing a gold colored car that wasn’t parked there earlier in his shift, McCastle said. When he approached the youths ran away, and the deputy found flames on the ground near a building with a propane tank and a tank of gasoline, she said.

The suspects later reappeared, coming back to the area, essentially ‘fessing up, McCastle added.

The teens were charged with one count of criminal trespassing and possession of a manufactured explosive device, said Lt. Belinda McCastle of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office.

Arrested were Kristopher Jon Osterhage, 17, of Old Greenville Road, Fayetteville, Jacob Charles Madkiff, 19, of Holly Springs Road, Sharpsburg and two juveniles of Fayetteville, police said.
