Many activities available to PTC teens apart from government functions

I read a letter last week about non-sports youth activities, with accusations that Mayor Logsdon isn’t going to respond to community demand to support them.

I can’t speak to the mayor’s priorities. What I want to point out is that there are programs and activities out there outside of the government.

I should know: My brother and I each earned our Eagle Scout ranks in Peachtree City’s oldest Boy Scouting troop, and my sister earned her Silver Badge in Girl Scouting.

Now, as a grown-up, I’m the technical director for another non-profit, non-government group which has given 13 years of education and social activity to local youths and adults: Offshoot Productions.

Offshoot was started in 1993 with two goals: to promote high-quality theater in the south metro area, and to offer rich acting education and experience to youths and adults of all ages.

We bring real theater professionals from as near as Fayetteville and as far as Athens to share the stage and their experience with acting apprentices, community volunteers, and workshop students. We also offer technical apprenticeships, business office internships, homeschool classes, and summer camps. We teach that theater is more than just lights and glamor: It’s hard work, and good fun.

But here’s my point: We aren’t part of the city budget. We never have been. We rely on the support of our volunteers and the sponsorship of local businesses. If you want us to keep going for seasons yet to come, we need you.

To contact Offshoot Productions, please call us at 770-631-2362, or e-mail us at [email protected].
