The first week of the college football season gave formerly local kickers a chance to shine.
- John Deraney, a Fayette County graduate now attending North Carolina State University, kicked three field goals and one extra point in the Wolfpack's 20-16 loss to Virginia Tech. His longest field goal was a 35 yarder.
- Chris James, a Starr's Mill graduate now kicking for Western Kentucky University, was 9-for-9 on extra point attempts in the school's 63-3 win over West Virginia Tech.
- Larry Beard, a Sandy Creek graduate, had one tackle for Georgia Southern in their 41-38 overtime win over Northeastern.
- Darrell Burston, a Starr's Mill graduate, had three assisted tackles in Florida State's 10-7 win over Miami on Monday night.
- Charles Castleberry, a McIntosh graduate, had one rushing attempt for eight yards for the University of Minnesota, Crookston in their 77-0 loss to South Dakota.
