Attina was surprised to learn that his name as submitted for the national certificate and he appreciates the recognition. Jessel stated that she was always impressed by how it was cared for.
"We are always looking for ways to recognize people in the community," said Jessel, who added that the chapter recognized the Pit Stop in Peachtree City for their proper flying and care of the flag last year.
For a flag to be recognized, it must be illuminated at night, flown properly and replaced or repaired if it becomes frayed. Attina said he learned a lot about flags once they put one up. The flag that hangs outside the store needs to be replaced once every six months and Attina added that they take it down during bad weather to make sure it does not get damaged.
Attina never expected to be honored for the memorial to his father but he is proud to be the recipient of the certificate and the members of the General Daniel Newnan Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution were glad they could help draw attention to a member of the community.
