Sex offender arrested in park

Peachtree City police nabbed a registered sex offender for several violations Monday at Picnic Park behind City Hall.

Lawrence Gaines, 43, of Azalea Drive, Peachtree City, was charged with driving on a revoked license, violation of golf cart registration requirements and sex offender registry violation following a routine check Monday.

Officers made contact with Gaines after he matched the description of a subject police were seeking to speak to regarding unspecified active investigations, Peachtree City Police Chief James Murray said in a prepared statement.

"A routine warrants check revealed that he possessed a revoked California's driver's license and was a registered sex offender," Murray said.

Gaines is being held at the Fayette County Jail. A bond hearing was expected to be held for Gaines Tuesday afternoon at the Fayette County Courthouse. Details of the event were unavailable at presstime.
