The Cubs strong defense was led by shortstop Daniel and middle infielders Wesolowski and Wilckens, while the outfield was led by centerfielder Ebbert, whose speed and strong arm combined for several assists, including getting a runner at the plate. Searcy, Smith and Wormer had to make the biggest leap from the smaller fields of the Majors, and played very well in both the infield and outfield.
The Cubs starting pitchers, Beadling, Daniel and Claburn, backed by relievers Wesolowski, Lucak and Adkins combined for a team ERA of 3.60 (only 56 earned runs) while striking out 177 batters.
Beadling, the MVP of the Cubs, had a terrific season, both at the plate (.635 batting average, 48 RBIs, seven doubles, four triples and six home runs, including a grand slam in the World Series championship game) and on the mound (13-0 with 77 strikeouts).
The Cubs hope their winning ways will continue next season, as at least half of the players will be returning.
