Investigation continues into assault on baby

No drug or alcohol test was administered to a Fayette County ex-con who allegedly slammed his infant son's head into a door frame, fracturing its skull, but officials say drugs and alcohol have been ruled out as a factor in the case.

Questions remain, however, regarding what prompted Adam Seth Brown, 20, of 160 Grandchester Way, to injure his 2-month-old son, Addison Brown.

Brown was arrested May 4 after Fayette County sheriff's officials learned of the baby's injury.

The incident allegedly took place at Brown's home while Brown was home alone with the baby, Fayette County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Lt. Belinda McCastle indicated.

Fayette County Department of Family and Children Services reported the incident after the injured baby arrived at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston May 3.

DFACS Director Mary Davis declined to release information on the case. However, sheriff's officials did confirm the case.

"The Fayette County Sheriff's Office Juvenile Investigators received notification via DFACS regarding a 2-month-old victim with evidence of alleged physical abuse," McCastle said. "The victim sustained a fractured skull, bruises on the back and under the eyes."

Addison was released from Egleston May 6.

When a reporter went to Brown's Grandchester Way address May 11 seeking further comment, a man identifying himself as the baby's grandfather answered the door. He did not give his name; the home is listed as belonging to James H. Smith.

The man said the baby "was fine," but declined to discuss any specifics about the case. He said Brown was married to his "daughter." The couple shared the home with the Smiths.

Brown is out on $44,100 bond. Officials do not believe additional charges will be filed against Brown, a construction worker.

The May incident wasn't the first time Brown ran afoul of the law.

In March 2002, Brown, then 17, was arrested and convicted of fondling a girl's breast on two separate days at Starr's Mill High School, according to Fayette County court records.

Brown was originally charged with two counts of sexual battery, but the charges were reduced to two counts of simple battery under a plea deal, records show.

Brown pleaded guilty to the charges and received 12 months probation and a $200 fine. He was sentenced under the first offender's act, records show.
