McDaniel named top science teacher
The Georgia Science Teachers Association has awarded Marilyn McDaniel the 2005 Science Teacher of the Year award.
McDaniel, who teaches at Sandy Creek High, received the award for District 5, high school division, at the annual GSTA awards program Feb. 19 in Columbus.
The award recognizes ongoing excellence in the teaching of science and commitment to its improvement. The STOY award is available in each of the 12 GSTA districts for elementary, middle and high school teachers who have four or more years of experience. Winners at each level receive $1,000.
Teachers are evaluated on their educational philosophies and how they incorporate new ideas/concepts and real world applications into their teaching assignments. Applicants are required to submit a lesson or unit plan that reflects their teaching philosophy. Additionally, they must have three supporting letters submitted on their behalf from a past student or parent, administrator and a peer teacher.
