Metro mayors meet with new ARC chief
Peachtree City Mayor Steve Brown led a delegation of Atlanta area mayors to Cobb County last week to meet with the new chairman of the Atlanta Regional Commission, Sam Olens.
Brown, chairman of the Metropolitan Atlanta Mayors Association, asked for the dialogue with Olens to establish a strategy on how metro mayors could play a vital role in creating solutions for regional government problems.
"Sam Olens has a great reputation as a consensus builder, and MAMA has given him our full support," stated Brown. "Our discussion was fruitful and we agreed that there is a lot that we can work on together to improve the Atlanta region."
Most of the discussion focused on transportation issues such as creating a process that targets funds for road projects that will provide the most congestion relief. There was also a proposal for joint support for the Georgia Department of Transportation to obtain more engineers to help streamline road improvements that are getting bogged down in the administrative process and delaying implementation. Olens also revealed the ARC would soon be conducting a transportation study of the entire south metro area that includes Fayette County.
