Canned food drive nets 5,113 cans
Sandy Creek High School's Air Force Junior ROTC (AFJROTC) program recently completed its annual holiday canned food drive, collecting a record-setting 5,113 cans, nearly quadrupling the previous year's best collection of effort of 1,200 cans.
The entire school participated in the effort and AFJROTC provided breakfasts to the classrooms with the maximum can contribution. Elizabeth Sims and Jody Haynes had the winning classrooms with 920 and 677 cans, respectively.
Master Sgt. Karvellis Lee organized the effort and the cadets in the AFJROTC program collected cans from each room, kept track of the daily count of cans from each class, sorted the cans and boxed them for distribution.
This is the third year of the AFJROTC program at Sandy Creek High. This is one of several community projects that involve AFJROTC cadets. The AFJROTC program is available to any student in Fayette County who wants to attend Sandy Creek High. For information on the program, contact Colonel Doug Pearson or Lee at 770-969-2840, ext. 278.
