Walgreen’s rezoning may come back Jan. 24

On the backburner for a while, plans to rezone the Christ Our Shepherd Lutheran Church site for a Walgreen's pharmacy may resurface late this month, officials said.

The matter may be revisited by the Peachtree City Planning Commission at its Jan. 24 meeting, said City Planner David Rast.

Since the plan was discussed at a workshop Nov. 8, the developer has been working on changes suggested by the city, Rast said. The meeting featured some opposition to the rezoning because of increased traffic at the intersection of Ga. Highway 54 and Peachtree Parkway. Some residents said the property could be better developed under its current zoning, which is office-institutional.

Church representatives have noted when the property was originally purchased, it was zoned for commercial use. The property, located at one corner of the intersection, is across the parkway from the Peachtree Crossing shopping center and across Hwy. 54 from a Ruby Tuesday's restaurant and an Eckerd pharmacy.

The church is seeking a limited use commercial zoning, which allows the city to attach more restrictions to the lot than allowed by regular ordinances. The plan includes a landscaped berm to protect the view of an adjacent neighborhood, the developer said.

The planning commission will only vote whether to recommend or deny the rezoning. The City Council will have the final say on whether or not the property is rezoned and what conditions will be placed on the site if the rezoning is approved.
