Fayetteville's new Law Enforcement Center, which will house the police department and municipal court, will cost $16,000 more than planned and completion may be delayed until January.

But the $16,000 hike will mostly be covered by the interest accrued from a grant received by the city for the COPS program, said City Engineer Don Easterbrook. Considering the $4 million price tag, $16,000 more isn't a lot of money, he said.

The overrun is due to an upgrade of the security system for the facility, Easterbrook said.

The delay on the project is due to steel for the site not being delivered on time, Easterbrook noted. The project was originally set to be finished in November, but now it looks more like it will open in January, he said.

The facility, under construction at the intersection of Jimmie Mayfield Boulevard and Bradley Drive, is being built by Group VI of Peachtree City.

Bids for the project came in $1.2 million under the city's original estimates. The project will be financed through the Georgia Municipal Association instead of the city paying for the entire cost up front.

On a 6.63-acre site, the police headquarters will be in a two-story structure that links to the one-story municipal court building. The 25,000 sq. ft. structure will have a brick exterior and reflective glass.

"It looks real good and we're happy with the way things are going," Easterbrook said.

The police headquarters will have a juvenile interview and retention area, conference room and records storage areas. Also included are locker rooms, training and workout rooms and an armory.

Areas for alcohol testing and fingerprinting of suspects were also designed into the building along with an evidence room.
