out-of-towners arrested with 4 kilos cocaine near Fayette Pavilion
Three Gwinnett men were arrested Friday after undercover drug agents caught
them with four kilos of cocaine in a residential neighborhood near the Fayette
Pavilion.
As police moved in to make the arrest on Pine Trail Road, the suspect tried
to get away in his white Honda — and almost ran over two sheriff’s
deputies in the process, said Lt. Col. Bruce Jordan, director of investigations
for the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department. One deputy fired a shot
at the car as it headed toward another deputy, but the shot missed the suspect
and went through the roof of the car, Jordan said.
“ He was shooting as he was falling down,” Jordan noted.
The vehicle zig-zagged around several unmarked units before it ran into a ditch
where two other unmarked trucks hemmed it in, Jordan noted.
The suspects, described as Hispanic males, will face felony charges of trafficking
in cocaine, Jordan said.
The drugs had a street value of $100,000, Jordan said. He said the deal had
no other connection to the neighborhood “other than it was a convenient
place” for the suspects to try and make the deal because it is a dead-end
street. Pine Trail Road is directly across Ga. Highway 85 from the Fayette
Pavilion shopping center.
The sheriff’s department helicopter unit was in the area in case the
suspect managed to get away.
One of the injured deputies had a sprained knee; the other had a sprained wrist
from where he had to push himself off of the suspect’s vehicle as it
passed, Jordan said.
Information from a wiretap alerted deputies to the plans for the deal, Jordan
confirmed.
