Two of three recommendations put forth by the Planning Commission were shot down Tuesday night at Union City's monthly City Council meeting. Text amendments made to the General Commercial Zoning District list of uses to include "Lessors of Miniwarehouses and Self-Storage Units" met with zero opposition from the Council and the public. Additional conditions concerning proper landscaping and a prohibiting of loudspeaker systems were added to the text along with a name change to mini-storage facilities.
Resolution 2004-04, concerning the development and construction of a Public Safety Training Facility in South Fulton County died for lack of information. "If I'm going to vote on it, I need some information. Sorry." Councilman Helen Turner informed those gathered. Simple questions of cost and uses for the facility could not be answered. All that was known at the time was that the structure would be utilized by the Union City Police and Fire Departments and that Mayor Boddie of Palmetto had presented the idea.
Low bidders for cement projects on Londonderry and Jonesboro Road, LNBJ Construction, shared the same disinterest from the Council as the previous resolution. LNBJ's low bid of $124,758 was motioned for approval by Barbara Bohannon but died "for lack of a second."
"I've never seen anything like it." Mayor Moore said as he closed the meeting and asked for the Council's vote to go into executive session.
