Three of the top ten teams in AAAAA are from Fayette County and two of them, Starr's Mill, currently ranked third, and Fayette County, ranked 10th, met at Starr's Mill on Tuesday night to determine the region champion. A win or a tie would give the title to Fayette County, while Starr's Mill had to win outright to nab the honor.

The first 10 minutes saw Starr's Mill dominate play, as they spent more time in the Fayette County half and have more scoring opportunities. Fayette County sent Bryan Collier on several scoring runs and started to push Starr's Mill back on their heels, but the Panthers responded and maintained much of the control for the remainder of the half. Halfway through the first half, the fans thought Starr's Mill had finally landed a goal in the lower right corner of the net, but the ball had gone out of bounds first.

Less than three minutes later, Fayette County's goalkeeper collided with a Starr's Mill player and needed to come out of the game momentarily. He came back several minutes later and kept Starr's Mill off the scoreboard for the remainder of the half. The Panthers picked up where they left off in the second half and had their best scoring opportunity of the game when Trey Maughan had a breakway. He missed the shot, but later was taken down inside the penalty box, which set up a penalty kick for Starr's Mill. Chip Rutland took the shot and scored, which gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead and the win.

Fayette County kept pressing and had several near misses as the game wore down, but Starr's Mill's defense and the play of goalkeeper Matt Troop kept any serious scoring attempts from connecting.

"It was a great match," said Starr's Mill coach Mike Hanie. "We missed some chances early and Fayette County played a great game."

Starr's Mill will now be the number one seed from region 4-AAAAA and will host the fourth seed from region 2-AAAAA. Fayette County is the number two seed and they will host the three seed from region 2-AAAAA. McIntosh ended up as the three seed in region 4-AAAAA and will have to travel to take on the second seed from region 2-AAAAA. All first-round state playoff games for the boys will start Tuesday.
