When the Newnan Theatre Company
had to cancel their upcoming production of "Steel Magnolias"
at the last minute they went to Plan B. In the theater, that means Broadway.
Thanks to a production license conflict, the "Broadway Cafe"
was born.
"We've been wanting
to do a Broadway review for a while" Artistic Director Dave Dorrell
said. "So we pulled some people together and said what song have
you always wanted to sing from 'Les Mis' or what song from Phantom
of the Opera?"
Like a Mickey Rooney and Judy
Garland brainstorm, the impromptu cast of four men and four women said,
"Let's put on a show!"
Dorrell sees the change of
plans as a great opportunity. "It's great for us because we
can sing these songs from shows we may never get to be in." For lovers
of classic show tunes, it's good news as well.
The theater's risers seating
has been moved out and replaced by tables and chairs to resemble a "hazy
and slightly seedy cabaret." The show itself is not confined to the
stage.
"We may start off singing
on the stage but may end up in somebody's lap before it's over,"
Dorrell warns.
The show itself is divided
into four parts: Leading Ladies, Heroes and Villains, Comedy and Love
Songs. This gives the troupe ample space to recreate a variety of magical
moments from the musical theater. There will be duets, solos, a couple
of trios and some large group numbers.
Plans to remount a production
of "Steel Magnolias" in this year's fall season are being
considered, so those who wish to see this show should keep an eye out.
Performances of "Broadway
Cafe" are on Friday and Saturday evenings, February 6, 7, 13 and
14 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for seniors. Soft drinks,
coffee, tea as well as beer and wine will be available for a donation.
BYOB and pay only $5 for mixers.
The production itself contains mature language and themes. For more information
