A recent visit to the recycling
facility used by Fayetteville's solid waste disposal company turned
up a bit more than city officials bargained for.
They learned that the recycling
plant can handle a greater variety of refuse, thereby reducing the stream
of garbage that enters landfills, according to City Engineer Don Easterbrook.
That means Fayetteville residents
can begin to recycle the following items instead of bagging them with
the normal trash:
- Bimetal cans.
- Aluminum cans and foil.
- #1 and #2 plastic containers
and bottles.
- Cardboard.
- Brown paper grocery
bags.
- Newspapers, magazines
and telephone books.
- Junk mail.
- Office paper.
"I think this is a significant
improvement in the city's service," Easterbrook told the City
Council last week.
Although the River View recycling
center does not accept glass bottles, those will continue to be accepted
at the Fayette County Solid Waste Transfer Station, Easterbrook said.
River View is one of three
commingled recycling facilities in Atlanta. It is utilized by Waste Management,
which was recently awarded the city's solid waste/recyclables collection
contract.
The company bid a price of
$8.99 per month, almost 20 cents cheaper than the next highest bidder,
Advanced Disposal South. Waste Management was selected after both companies'
proposals were evaluated using price and qualification criteria.
Waste Management has committed
to provide more timely reports and better communications with city staff,
improved maintenance of collection equipment and containers and recycling
education.
Easterbrook said the company
came through for the city by performing extra debris pickups for residents
affected by the flood conditions in April.
The contract runs for one year
and can be renewed by the city manager for up to four consecutive years.
