While enjoying a break from

classes, most of the local high school basketball teams took part in holiday

tournament around the metro Atlanta area and will resume their regular

schedules in earnest this week.

- The McIntosh Chiefs

overwhelmed the Paideia Pythons with a flawless first quarter, then played

scrappy defense to hold on for a 51-45 win at the Mt. Zion tournament

Saturday night.

The Chiefs found the open man

every time down the floor at the outset. Mixing fast break layups with

three-point jumpers, McIntosh hit five 3-pointers en route to a 26-11

lead at the end of the first quarter.

Both teams settled down and

played tough defense the rest of the way. Paideia came back on the shooting

touch of Ali Kareem who led all scorers with 17 points. Mike Vandenberg

added 14 for the Pythons.

McIntosh enjoyed a balanced

scoring attack from inside and out. But poor free throw shooting, only

3 of 10, prevented the Chiefs from icing the game until Cameron Wallace

put back an offensive rebound with less than a minute to go. Jason Williams

and Cameron Wallace each scored 12 for the Chiefs and Brett Boron and

Patrick Cheney added 9 apiece.

In the girls' game, Paideia

prevailed 47-32. The Lady Chiefs started strong but wilted under the Lady

Pythons pressure. Sparkle Davis for Paideia led all scorers with 19 points.

Joni Vickers had 7 points and 3 assists for McIntosh. Kristen McKillop

scored 9 in limited action.

- The Starr's Mill

boys dropped their final two games in the Shiloh Thanksgiving Shootout

and were 1-2 on the season going into last night's matchup with Newnan.

The Panthers dropped a tough 55-53 decision Friday to the undefeated Generals

of Shiloh. Caleb Graham and Mike Mock scored 15 each for the Panthers

and Vinnie LeDonne added 10. Saturday's opponent was Westminster

and the Panthers lost 72-53. Vinnie LeDonne's 12 points led Starr's

Mill with Mock chipping in 11.

The Lady Panthers also played

in the Shiloh Shootout, picking up losses against Brookwood, Shiloh and

Westminster. Ashley Marine was the team's leading scorer in all three

games, with 15 against Brookwood, 16 against Shiloh and 26 against Westminster

- a game in which she nailed five three-pointers. Jenny Norman and

Angela Garza also had double-figure scoring games during the tournament,

and Norman was the team's top rebounder.

- The Fayette County High

boys participated in the Mt. Zion Thanksgiving tournament and picked up

two wins in three games. Jordan Windisch led the team in scoring with

16 points in a 74-71 win over Paidiea, with Stephen Pleasant scoring 13

and Sheldon Harris chipping in 10 points and 11 rebounds. Sidney McFadden

led the team

with 5 assists.

The Tigers pulled out a 56-55

overtime win over Mt. Zion, with Windisch scoring 24 and Harris and Brandon

Spencer getting 10 apiece. Spencer led the team in rebounding with 11

and McFadden led the team in assists with five.

The final game of the tournament

for Fayette County was a 76-57 loss to South Cobb. Windisch scored 14,

followed by Pleasant with 11. Spencer led the team with eight rebounds.

The Fayette County Lady Tigers

fell 40-32 to South Cobb Saturday in the Truetts Tip Off Classic. The

FCHS boys and girls were scheduled to open their home schedule last night

against Lovejoy.

- This week's coaches

polls show Landmark in the state's top 10 in Class A in boys (fourth)

and girls (seventh) rankings. In AAAA, Sandy Creek is 12th in the boys

poll.
