USC on SEC Soccer Good Works Team

South Carolina women's

soccer player Amanda Thurber, a sophmore from Fayetteville and 2002 graduate

of Starr's Mill High, has been named to the SEC Soccer Good Works

Team, which highlights an athlete from each SEC school who gives back

to their community through service efforts.

Thurber, a biology major, worked

at a soccer clinic for Lexington County Soccer Club and read to students

for Read Across America Day at Saluda River Academy for the Arts.

Thurber spoke about leadership

and interacted with the kids at River Springs Elementary and Irmo Elementary

Schools. She has also demonstrated safety techniques for playing soccer

at the Soccer Safety Clinic at Providence Northeast Hospital.

In high school, Thurber served

as a peer mediator and was vice-president of her senior class.

She played in all 21 matches

this year for the Gamecocks with 20 starts. The midfielder had two goals

and three assists on the season.

The daughter of Bill and Karen

Thurber of Fayette County has been called the "playmaker" for

the Lady Gamecocks. She was named the team's freshman of the year

last season.

She was captain of the Starr's

Mill team her junior and senior years and helped lead the Lady Panthers

to state titles in 1999 and 2000.
