Each year residents

at Peachtree City's Southland Nursing Home compete for the Ms. Southland

title and the chance to compete in the state nursing home pageant. This

year, only seven local contestants chose to try for the honor, making

the choice even harder for the judges.

County Commission

Chair Greg Dunn, Commissioner Peter Pfeifer, Dr. Tom Williams, Janet McGregor,

Debra Fowler and Cappie Glanton once again judged the event. This is the

third year that all six have judged the contest. Dunn, Pfeifer, Williams

and McGregor are veterans, having been judges for over six years.

Superior Court

Judge Chris Edwards once again wowed the crowd and charmed the contestants

as the emcee. For the contestants, it can be daunting to answer questions

and be their best in front of a crowd. Edwards quickly puts them at ease

and often has the ladies sharing bits of their history, a joke or a poignant

moment.

In past years,

the Marine Aviation Logistic Squadron 42 has escorted the contestants

onto the floor. This year, with the war in progress, the Squadron was

unable to participate. Members of the McIntosh High School Student Ambassadors

did an outstanding job of standing in for the Marines. Other members helped

Many helped

in putting the annual event together. The Peachtree City Kiwanis and family

members helped to sponsor the contest. Donations from Precision Trophy,

Stallings Frame Shop, Natures Nursery and Peachtree Florist contributed

trophies, flowers, decorations, corsages and other items. Mary Kay donated

makeup with the assistance of Angie Brown and Debbie Azzarelli. Beauty

shop volunteers Diane Medlan and Connie Schneider made sure the ladies

were properly coiffed. Helen McNamee once again leant her tasteful touch

to decorating the area and chef Sandy Dow made a wonderful cake and other

food for the reception after the contest.

Ensemble Pour

Deux, comprised of Kaylynn Davis and Barbara Hood, shared their musical

talents to round out the pageant, which means so much to contestants and

their families and friends.

The winner

of the contest is not automatically guaranteed a chance to vie for the

statewide Nursing Home contest. Winners from nursing homes across the

state are submitted to a panel which determines who will be selected to

compete.
