People fall
on two sides of the snake issue. Some people have no problem looking at,
touching or holding snakes, while the other half typically runs screaming
or making some half-frightened, half-disgusted noise. If you are one of
the former types, Snake Day at the Cochran Mill Nature Center in Palmetto
is for you.
Snake Day will
feature a number of native and non-native reptiles, insects and amphibians,
as well as several animal experts to answer questions and to provide a
wealth of information on these creatures. Scheduled to make an appearance
at Snake Day are a 10' albino Burmese python, a green tree python, poison
dart frogs, red-eyed tree frogs, geckos, a monitor lizard, chameleons,
rattle snakes, tarantulas, scorpions, African Spurred Tortoises and an
American alligator. Admission to Snake Day is free.
The Cochran
Mill Nature Center offers a number of special events like Snake Day throughout
the year. It was formed by a group of concerned citizens on 50 private
acres adjacent to Cochran Mill Park, an 800-acre nature preserve owned
and managed by Fulton County. The center is a non-profit organization
that relies on volunteers, memberships and donations. They began offering
educational programs in 1991 and built a log cabin lodge in 1993.
To get to the
Cochran Mill Nature Center from Peachtree City, take Ga. Highway 74 North
and cross over I-85, going straight until the road dead ends. Take a left
on to Rivertown Rd. and go to the third stop sign. Take a left on to Cochran
Mill Rd. and the center is 200 yards ahead up on the left.
