last weekend. On the girls' side, Cammy Andrews of Fayette County tied
for sixth in the high jump and Jenny Norman of Starr's Mill placed eighth
in the discus throw. In boys' action, Starr's Mill finished eighth in
the 4x400-meter relay and fifth in the 800 sprint medley, while Johnny
Edwards of the Panthers placed eighth in the 100 and teammate Michael
Kursteiner tied for sixth in the high jump.
The Starr's
Mill Lady Panthers defeated Lovejoy 15-0 in a March 14 match. Shelley
Wegrzyn, Tannah Castro and Beth Meadors scored three goals apiece, while
Kelley O'Hara, Michelle Callen and Katie Jacobsen each contributed two
goals.
Lovejoy's
boys defeated Landmark 3-2 in an overtime match March 18. Eric Worrell
scored both Landmark goals, one off an assist from Joseph Keywood and
the other after a 30-yard run with the ball. After Lovejoy scored in the
first overtime, the second extra period was not played due to darkness.
Senior swimmer
Kirsten Cartoski of Our Lady of Mercy was selected to the 2003 Speedo
Academic All-American Team by the National Swim Coach's Associaton. She
was also selected to the All State first team by the Georgia Swim Coach's
Association after winning the 100-yard breastroke title at the Georgia
High School State Championships. She will attend and swim at Yale Univerity
in the fall of 2003.
Landmark shut
out W.D. Mohammed 3-0 in a boys' match March 20. Josh Polgardi scored
on a header off a Joseph Keywood throw-in, and Eric Worrell also scored
off a Keywood throw-in. Blake Fertitta took a long kick from Keywood and
dribbled past several defenders for the final score.
Starr's Mill
downed Newnan 4-1 in girls' action March 18. The Lady Panthers' Kelley
O'Hara scored the first goal early, assisted by Shelley Wegrzyn, and the
two combined for another score in the second half to break a 1-1 tie.
O'Hara completed a hat trick two minutes later off a rebound after a shot
35 yards out. Newnan's lone goal came midway through the first half when
Emily Asher's corner kick was deflected to Christie McDonald, who scored
