Southwest Christian
Hospice began in 1982 and opened its first inpatient facility in 1987.
The center provides care for terminally ill patients at no charge to the
patients or their families. It now has 46 full- and part-time employees
and more than 200 volunteers, working both in the home-based program and
the center-based facility. It is estimated that the services of Southwest
Christian Hospice have touched the lives of more than 15,000 individuals
in the Atlanta area.
In 1996, the
center expanded the scope of its activities to include care for children
with life-threatening illnesses. In addition to providing pediatric home-based
care, the center also includes center-based respite care for children
with chronic illnesses.
In June, 2002,
the children's respite center, "Hope House," was dedicated.
Hope House provides temporary relief for families and caregivers both
through homecare and inpatient care.
Proceeds from
the banquet are tax deductible and go directly toward underwriting the
overall operating budget of the hospice and Hope House.
