Starr's Mill
High School's drama department has done it again.
The cast and
crew has captured the Region 4-AAAAA title in the One Act Competition
for the second year in a row. This year's production of "The Diviners"
was directed by David Spearman, the school's new drama instructor.
"The Diviners"
takes place in fictional Zion, Ill. Buddy Layman, a 14-year-old boy, nearly
drowned when he was 6 years old. The accident killed his mother and left
Buddy mentally handicapped and terrified of water. He lives with his father,
Ferris, and his sister, Jennie Mae. C.C. Showers, a former preacher, comes
to Zion, befriends Buddy and his family. It is a story of redemption and
gaining trust.
Craig DeLorenzo
won Best Actor in the region for the second year in a row for his portrayal
of Buddy. DeLorenzo and three other cast members, Joshua Davis, Carlee
Baker and Ryan McConnell, were named to the Region 4 All-Star Cast. Starr's
Mill took "The Diviners" to state competition last weekend.
Spearman was
impressed with the drama students at Starr's Mill. "They have an
impeccable work ethic and they are eager to do well," said Spearman,
who had previously taught at the Magnet School for the Performing Arts
in Charlotte, N.C.
The public
will get a chance to view "The Diviners" this Thursday and Saturday
at Starr's Mill's Duke Auditorium. Performances begin at 7:30 p.m. and
admission is $5. Up next for Starr's Mill will be "South Pacific"
in April. Auditions will take place Jan. 9 and 10.
