Everyone has
heard of evil stepsisters ruining the lives of people, but in Southside
Theater Guild's production of "The Curious Savage," it is evil
stepchildren that wreak havoc on the life of the story's heroine, the
eccentric and wealthy Mrs. Savage.
After her husband
dies, Mrs. Savage's stepchildren have her committed to The Cloisters in
an attempt to extort her fortune from her. It is at The Cloisters that
Mrs. Savage meets some wonderful people, leaving her and the audience
wondering just who is crazy.
"The Curious
Savage" was written by John Patrick, who is best known for "Tea
House of the August Moon," "The Hasty Heart," and "Everybody
Loves Opal." It's a family-friendly show with good values and that
appealed to director Michael McClendon.
"The good
guys win, but not without enduring many struggles first," said McClendon.
"It is the perfect show to do right now. It is very positive and
it celebrates old-fashioned values."
The show is
set in the 1940s and thanks to the amazing work and research of the crew,
the look and feel of the era has been captured. "The clothing, the
hairstyles and the shoes are all just right," said McClendon. "They
are one of the best crews I have ever worked with. They have really gone
the extra mile."
McClendon also
is pleased with his cast, which has given a tremendous effort and overcome
lots of adversity in the months leading up to the show. The show features
Ginger McMichael, Glo Tinsley, Steve Martin (not the famous comedian),
John Kennedy (not the former president) Teri Hoffman and Lily Yancy, a
professional actress from Atlanta whom McClendon describes as "electric."
"The Curious
Savage" will be performed at Southside Theater Guild in Fairburn,
Thursdays through Saturdays, at 8 p.m. through Dec. 1. Admission is $12
for adults and $10 for children. Phone 770-969-0956 or visit www.stgplays.com .
