In his time
in Scouting Thompson helped with many civic projects, including Scouting
for Food, Scouting for Toys, service projects cleaning up parks, and working
on his own Eagle project as well as the Eagle projects of his fellow Scouts.
Thompson's project was a prayer garden, with stepping stones and extensive
landscaping, at his home church of First Baptist in Peachtree City.
Taking advantage
of his training and experience in Scouting, Thompson and a friend traveled
in 2000 to Spain and France to hike the Pyrannes mountains. He had previously
been on a 10-day hiking trip at the Boy Scout facility in Philmont, N.M.,
as well as troop hikes throughout Georgia.
Thompson took
part in the 1996 National Boy Scout Jamboree. He enjoyed Camp Thunder
(the local council camp) and the Over and Under Program of the Lawhorn
Canoe Base, part of Thunder Reservation. He went in caves, canoed whitewater
rivers, fished, camped, hiked and sailed in many venues organized by the
local Boy Scouts.
